Assessment (Higher Education Courses) Policy

Section 1 - Preamble

(1) This Policy was approved by Academic Board on 14 May 2013, effective from the end of Trimester 1, 2013.

Section 2 - Purpose

(2) This Policy governs assessment in undergraduate and postgraduate award courses other than higher degrees by research.

Section 3 - Scope

(3) This Policy applies to assessment in undergraduate and postgraduate award courses other than higher degrees by research (see Higher Degrees by Research Assessment Procedure).

Section 4 - Policy

(4) The University ensures that the following principles underpin assessment:

  1. Assessment tasks are opportunities for students to provide evidence of their achievement of learning outcomes, and to obtain advice on how to improve.
  2. Assessment at Deakin:
    1. places assessment for learning at the centre of unit and course design
    2. is used to engage students in learning
    3. ensures prompt feedback and provides advice on improving future performance
    4. simulates the types of challenges students will encounter in their future professional, personal and civic lives
    5. is designed to enable inclusive and trustworthy evidence of student achievement
    6. ensures students are inducted into assessment practices and cultures.
  3. Assessment incorporates rigorous academic standards related to the discipline(s) and is based on pre-determined and clearly articulated criteria aligned with course learning outcomes and standards which are derived from Deakin's Graduate Learning Outcomes and are consistent with the Australian Qualifications Framework.
  4. Assessment provides diagnostic, timely and meaningful formative feedback, as well as summative judgments about performance.
  5. Assessment design and administration promote academic integrity.
  6. Assessment purposes, criteria and standards are clearly communicated to students.
  7. Assessment is varied, fair, equitable and inclusive.
  8. To encourage the development of critical self-reflection, assessment includes self-assessment and peer assessment.
  9. Assessment practices must be manageable and sustainable for staff and students.
  10. Judgments about student performance in assessment tasks may be reviewed where students can demonstrate reasonable grounds.
  11. Assessment at the unit level is graded in accordance with the grading schema as set out in Schedule A: Grading Schema for Assessment in Higher Education Courses of the Assessment (Higher Education Courses) Procedure.

(5) The Academic Board is responsible for overall quality assurance in assessment across the University.

(6) Faculty Boards and Assessment Panels are responsible for ensuring that unit assessments are designed in accordance with the principles of assessment set out in the Assessment (Higher Education Courses) Policy.

Section 6 - Definitions

(8) For the purpose of this Policy:

  1. Assessment: as defined in Regulation 5.3(1) - Assessment and Academic Progress in Higher Education Award Courses.
  2. Course: as defined in Regulation 5.3(1) - Assessment and Academic Progress in Higher Education Award Courses.
  3. Examination: as defined in Regulation 5.3(1) - Assessment and Academic Progress in Higher Education Award Courses.
  4. Grade: a descriptive indicator of a student's achievement in an assessment task or a unit, awarded by an academic staff member as part of a marking process. Grades and corresponding marks are set out in Schedule A: Grading Schema for Assessment in Higher Education Courses of the Assessment (Higher Education Courses) Procedure.
  5. Mark: a numerical indicator of a student's achievement in an assessment task or a unit, awarded by the academic staff member as part of a marking process. Grades and corresponding marks are set out in Schedule A: Grading Schema for Assessment in Higher Education Courses of the Assessment (Higher Education Courses) Procedure.
  6. Result: as defined in Regulation 5.3(1) - Assessment and Academic Progress in Higher Education Award Courses.
  7. Unit: as defined in Regulation 5.3(1) - Assessment and Academic Progress in Higher Education Award Courses.
