(1) This Procedure is effective from 21 September 2016. (2) This Procedure outlines the requirements for publication and dissemination of research conducted, according to the Australian Code for the Responsible Conduct of Research, 2018 (the Code). (3) This Procedure applies to all research undertaken by staff and students of the University. (4) This Procedure is pursuant to the Research Conduct policy. (5) The University acknowledges the importance of research being communicated to other researchers, professional practitioners and the wider community. Researchers have a responsibility to disseminate and publish research outcomes broadly to pass on the benefits to other researchers, professional practitioners and the wider community. (6) Before disseminating research findings, researchers will develop a publication strategy and adhere to any confidentiality, privacy, contractual or funding restrictions, including those concerning intellectual property. (7) Where possible, research findings should be peer reviewed by impartial and independent assessors in the same or a related field. (8) If the research is considered 'dual use of research of concern' or relates to research on the Defence and Strategic Goods List (DSGL), it should only be disseminated in accordance with the requirements of Defence Trade Controls Act (Cwth) 2012 and with the advice of Defence Export Control. (9) Researchers will take all reasonable steps to ensure that disseminated research is accurate and properly reported by: (10) Publication of multiple papers based on the same set(s) or subset(s) of data is not acceptable except where there is full cross-referencing within the papers (for example, in a series of closely related work, or where a complete work grew out of a preliminary publication and this is fully acknowledged). (11) If significantly similar work is presented to more than one publisher, this must be disclosed to the publisher at the time of submission. (12) Researchers must abide by copyright and obtain permission from the original publisher before republishing research findings. (13) In discussing the outcomes of a research project in a public arena, special care should be taken to explain the status of the project (for example, whether it is still in progress or has been finalised). (14) Researchers should only discuss research findings in the public arena after the findings have been tested through peer review, except in the case of contracted research where no peer reviewers have involvement. (15) All research publications will be reported by the researcher to the University for the purposes of the assessment and display of research output in accordance with University and external procedures outlined on the Deakin Research website. (16) All refereed publications by University researchers in conferences, journals and books will be deposited in the Deakin Research Online repository and in so doing researchers agree to the terms and conditions of the Deakin Research Online Deposit Agreement. (17) All research publications will be made available to anyone on the web, except where this is restricted by copyright law, publisher policy or embargo. If researchers wish material to not be made publicly available they must gain written permission from the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Research for it to be confidential. (18) Researchers will acknowledge authorship of, and contributions to, ideas in any publication, dissemination or assessment task.
