Naming of University Facilities and Entities policy

Section 1 - Preamble

(1) This Policy is effective from 5 March 2015.

Section 2 - Purpose

(2) This Policy sets down principles and a coordinated approach for the naming of University facilities and entities.

Section 3 - Scope

(3) This Policy applies across the University but does not apply to naming of facilities and entities after their function or location, nor does it apply to the names of businesses operating on the University's campuses.

Section 4 - Policy

(4) The naming of University entities and facilities will be consistent with the University's strategic objectives and will be coordinated by the Deakin Advancement.

(5) A University facility or entity may be named in recognition of:

  1. an individual who has achieved distinction in the services of the University or in a field relevant to the University (honorific naming)
  2. a donor who has supported the University generously over time, or one who is prepared to offer significant support at a point in time (philanthropic naming).

(6) The Chief Advancement Officer will, from time to time, review and establish a schedule of proposed gift levels for naming rights.

(7) The Chief Advancement Officer may recommend the naming or renaming of a University entity or facility to the Vice-Chancellor in accordance with this policy and its related procedure.

(8) On the recommendation of the Vice-Chancellor the University Council may confer a name on a University facility or entity or grant naming rights in respect of a facility or entity.

(9) Individuals and organisations whose names or naming rights are approved are expected to exemplify the attributes of integrity and civil leadership. Should an individual or organisation violate these standards, University Council may, on the recommendation of the Vice-Chancellor, revoke the name or the naming rights.

(10) Naming may be conferred for a specified period of time, and will not necessarily be conferred in perpetuity.

(11) A name will remain in use only for the life of an entity or facility.

(12) The Naming of University Facilities and Entities procedure documents how to comply with this Policy.

Section 6 - Definitions

(13) For the purpose of this Policy:

  1. honorific naming: naming of facilities or entities to honour individuals who have achieved distinction in the services of the University.
  2. naming rights: the right to name a facility or entity in honour of an individual or an organisation, or in recognition of financial contribution and support
  3. philanthropic naming: naming of facilities or entities to recognise the generous support of individuals, corporations, organizations and foundations who have supported the University over time, as well as those who are prepared to offer significant support at a point in time.
  4. university entities: academic and other entities such as Faculties, Schools, Centres and Institutes, Professorial Chairs or other significant academic positions, programs and projects, or any other entity not listed which may be recommended for naming after consultation with the Chief Advancement Officer.
  5. university facilities: University property not limited to campuses, lecture theatres, classrooms, laboratories, conference rooms, halls, buildings, roads, gardens, lawns and courtyards or other locations or structures.
