Academic Integrity policy

Section 1 - Preamble

(1) This Policy is effective from 7 September 2017.

Section 2 - Purpose

(2) This Policy sets out the University's approach to maintaining and dealing with issues of Academic Integrity.

Section 3 - Scope

(3) This Policy applies to Academic staff in the conduct of teaching, research and related activities.

Section 4 - Policy

(4) Academic staff will demonstrate Academic Integrity in all duties relating to teaching and research.

(5) In demonstrating Academic Integrity, Academic staff will:

  1. acknowledge authorship of, and contributions to, ideas in their teaching materials and research output
  2. observe confidentiality in all dealings with students, colleagues and confidential research activities
  3. avoid personal bias and strive to ensure their conduct is objective, honest and equitable in their dealings with students, colleagues and in their research activities
  4. respect the diverse backgrounds of students and colleagues
  5. disclose any conflict of interest, in accordance with the Declaration of Interest procedure, including any personal or financial interest they have in any text, software or other course-related materials or parts thereof that they are considering prescribing
  6. refrain from using information gained in the course of their teaching or research for personal, commercial or third party advantage
  7. observe the integrity and ethical rights of human and animal subjects in research and teaching
  8. acknowledge academic merit and ensure student assessment outcomes are based on a set of appropriate and relevant criteria in accordance with the Assessment (Higher Education Courses) Procedure.

(6) Academic staff will conduct their research activities in accordance with the Code of Good Practice in Research procedure and in compliance with the Australian Code for the Responsible Conduct of Research, 2018.

(7) The University will manage all alleged breaches of Academic Integrity in accordance with the Staff Discipline procedure and the Deakin University Enterprise Agreement 2023.

Section 5 - Procedure

(8) The Academic Integrity procedure documents how to comply with this Policy.

Section 6 - Definitions

(9) For the purpose of this Policy:

  1. Academic Integrity: a commitment by University Academic staff members to adhere, in all teaching, research and related activities, to five fundamental values: honesty, trust, fairness, respect and responsibility.
