Summary of Changes from Previous Version

On 5 December 2017  the Procedure was renamed ‘Credit for Prior Learning’ to reflect terminology commonly used across the higher education sector. Additional amendments were to:

- articulate the responsibilities of the University Credit for Prior Learning Office, a central coordinating point within DSA that will enable the agreed approach to the administration and management of CPL at Deakin.

- include a definition of “precedent” for the purposes of application within the CPL process.

- refine the requirements of how and when students will apply for credit, thereby establishing a connection between the admissions process and decisions regarding credit.

- articulate the requirement for students to provide adequate evidence to support claims of credit.

- specify the requirements in relation to the timing of: (a) applications for credit where a student has already enrolled in the unit (b) credit decisions where a precedent exists (c) confirmation of referred credit recommendations.

- introduce a requirement to maintain records of all credit decisions within the University CPL Database.

- establish a review process for credit decisions, obviating the requirement to refer students to the formal Complaints process in the first instance.

Administrative amendments were made to the Policy on 14 June 2018 to replace the references to the ‘Pro Vice-Chancellor Research Training and Performance Enhancement’ with ‘Pro Vice-Chancellor Researcher Development and Integrity’ in clauses 13,15 and 16.
